We are delighted to announce the establishment of two new social groups for young people on the spectrum in Fremantle.
Commencing February 2017, Autism West will kick off two new youth groups for young people on the spectrum at the Police Community Youth Centre in Piaget Street;
Louise Sheehy, Autism West Operations Manager, oversees the service delivery of all of the Autism West social groups, and says;
I’m passionate about all individuals deserving their dreams, aspirations and aims to be recognised and given the opportunity to develop to their individual potential. Equality can only contribute to the enrichment of society for now and into the future. I love the individual personalities I meet along the way, as well as the diversity of thinking.
Our youth groups focus on the strengths and interests of our members, helping them to build friendships and self-esteem, while encouraging them to choose their own activities and excursions. Throughout the years, our groups have been involved in nerf wars, anime, film-making, and more. In 2016, one of our groups even created a documentary which is currently in pre-production and soon to be launched!
YES group is filled with amazing people – it has changed my life. – YES Group member
In addition to the usual social group activities, this year we are introducing music, visual arts, digital media, coding and Lego robotics into the groups, with artists and experts facilitating term projects for member’s to explore. This may uncover a future career interest or even the next budding artist or entrepreneur!
Having the ability to access services like the YES group have helped my son to grow and become an independent confident young man. – Parent
We are looking for young people on the spectrum who are seeking friendships and a way to explore their interests in a safe and supportive environment, to join our Fremantle groups. In honour of Autism West arriving in Fremantle, we are offering one free session for those who enroll in one of our new Fremantle-based groups throughout Term 1, 2017.
